Small Biz Week - A look back at National Small Business Week.

Jordan and I loved celebrating National Small Business Week in Austin, Texas with The UPS Store.

As a very NEW small biz owner myself, I thrive on receiving the advice from others that have gone before me and from those who are in the same boat. Learning and growing from each other and with each other is (in my opinion) how we keep going, stay creative and innovative. We all are "experts" in our own way and experiences with something to share and contribute.

Check out my bits of my story from the post "A Honest Truth About Running a Small Business". I would enjoy hearing what your journey has been like as well!

If you want to know more about
how The UPS Store can partner
with your small biz, check out

CLIENT STORY : Slice up the Pie

Pie Society! YUM YES PLEASE, who doesn't love pie, and even better when you share it with others!? Although Im not talking about freshly baked pie per-say, this slice of pie keeps going and going.
This logo concept came to me from the Waco Foundation as they are working on a new planned giving campaign to generate public awareness for a transfer of wealth opportunity in McLennan County. With the tagline, "Thank you for sharing a slice of your pie," their campaign is geared towards showing how MUCH impact can be made with sharing JUST 5% of your estate with charity. Waco Foundation wanted to play off of the pie theme, because it is so much more fun to talk about pie rather than death, dying or diverting assets.  The whole pie represents an individual’s accumulated wealth during their lifetime and the small offset slice represents the slice shared for charitable causes. Therefore I needed to come up with a logo that summed up this campaign, "sharing a slice of your pie."
As you can see I sketched a lot and for a while. I thought this logo would be fairly easy to create and stream line, but for some reason that just wasn't the case. As I have learned, and am still learning, "simple" and "clean" takes a lot of creativity, effort, and even starting over if need be (which I did a couple of times). I ended up showing the client more "concepts" than I usually do because I wanted to get their feedback on a couple ideas swimming around in my head. Luckily, a concept was chosen on the spot from two ideas, so I was able to move forward in the refining process by combining both into one final logo, YAY!
In hindsight, I suppose enjoying some fresh baked pie while sketching might have helped the process along, eatable inspiration, oh well. You can check out their video on sharing your 5% here.

National Small Business Week : Mark Cuban's 12 Rules for Startups

“National Small Business Week is a chance to honor our nation’s 28 million small businesses and renew our commitment to fostering the entrepreneurial spirit that is central to the American experience,” says SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet, the head of the U.S. Small Business Administration.

As a graphic designer and small business owner, it's a week to celebrate while gaining the advise and wisdom from other business leaders! So I am headed to Austin, TX for a "Small Biz Salute" Networking Event at the Palm Door on Sixth. If you are in the Austin, TX area, take a break, come out, and network with Austin small business owners and entrepreneurs from 5:30-7:30pm. It's sponsored by The UPS Store and is free for the first 100 guests.

Shark Tank is one of my favorite shows, so I am sharing with you Mark Cuban's 12 Rules for Startups, (from entrepreneur.com) which are simple and straight forward (my kind of advise) or check out the video below.

1. Don't start a company unless it's an obsession and something you love.

2. If you have an exit strategy, it's not an obsession.

3. Hire people who you think will love working there.

4. Sales Cure All. Know how your company will make money and how you will actually make sales.

5. Know your core competencies and focus on being great at them. Pay up for people in your core competencies. Get the best. Outside the core competencies, hire people that fit your culture but aren't as expensive to pay.

6. An espresso machine? Are you kidding me? Coffee is for closers. Sodas are free. Lunch is a chance to get out of the office and talk. There are 24 hours in a day, and if people like their jobs, they will find ways to use as much of it as possible to do their jobs.

7. No offices. Open offices keep everyone in tune with what is going on and keep the energy up. If an employee is about privacy, show him or her how to use the lock on the bathroom. There is nothing private in a startup. This is also a good way to keep from hiring executives who cannot operate successfully in a startup. My biggest fear was always hiring someone who wanted to build an empire. If the person demands to fly first class or to bring over a personal secretary, run away. If an exec won't go on sales calls, run away. They are empire builders and will pollute your company.

8. As far as technology, go with what you know. That is always the most inexpensive way. If you know Apple, use it. If you know Vista, ask yourself why, then use it. It's a startup so there are just a few employees. Let people use what they know.

9. Keep the organization flat. If you have managers reporting to managers in a startup, you will fail. Once you get beyond startup, if you have managers reporting to managers, you will create politics.

10. Never buy swag. A sure sign of failure for a startup is when someone sends me logo-embroidered polo shirts. If your people are at shows and in public, it's okay to buy for your own employees, but if you really think people are going to wear your branded polo when they're out and about, you are mistaken and have no idea how to spend your money.

11. Never hire a PR firm. A public relations firm will call or email people in the publications you already read, on the shows you already watch and at the websites you already surf. Those people publish their emails. Whenever you consume any information related to your field, get the email of the person publishing it and send them a message introducing yourself and the company. Their job is to find new stuff. They will welcome hearing from the founder instead of some PR flack. Once you establish communication with that person, make yourself available to answer their questions about the industry and be a source for them. If you are smart, they will use you.Related: Is Any Publicity Good Publicity?

12. Make the job fun for employees. Keep a pulse on the stress levels and accomplishments of your people and reward them. My first company, MicroSolutions, when we had a record sales month, or someone did something special, I would walk around handing out $100 bills to salespeople. At Broadcast.com and MicroSolutions, we had a company shot. The Kamikaze. We would take people to a bar every now and then and buy one or ten for everyone. At MicroSolutions, more often than not we had vendors cover the tab. Vendors always love a good party.

Watercolor Wedding Suite

The delicate beauty and classic touches of Alex's wedding were mirrored in the lovely wedding paper suite I created for her. From the choices in paper stock, to her custom envelope liners, all the way to her watercolor map, each detail I created and selected was reflective of her stunning taste. Together, we were able to paint the perfect picture of her wedding day as each guest received their invitation in the mail. Alex wanted each piece that was created to be similar, yet a little different. I was able to accomplish that for her by adding in watercolor strokes here and there, using the same color palette but increasing the hue saturations to mix it up a bit, and by creating more playful, bolder pieces for the reception card. Of course, choosing the right combination of typefaces is always key and helps to set the tone and feel of a design. Thank you Alex, for your warm heart and kind character. You were a joy to create with. Congratulations Alex and Connor; the best is yet to come!

Here & There: A Trip to Nashville

My husband and I took a short trip to Nashville recently and I came back refreshed and inspired. It was a great mix of work, rest, and play.

It was my first time experiencing Nashville and I fell in love with the city. It was full of art, culinary innovation, culture and charm—oh and, of course, music!

If you ever find yourself in the lovely city of Nashville, here are a few spots we really dug:

1 // Driving through the West End, Hillsboro and Bellmead to take it all in.

2 // German Town which houses the incredible City House restaurant.

3 // If you love letterpress, walk through the Onmi downtown and visit Hatch Show Print.

4 // Downtown’s Southern Restaurant and Mike’s Ice Cream are perfect walking distance. To me, this feels like quintessential Nashville!

5 // We also hiked for three hours through Edwin Warner Park. The trails were breathtaking!

As a graphic designer, I find it really inspiring to observe design in other places, spaces and cities. Some of the things I like to look for (and you can, too!) are classic design that has been there forever, what is hip and trendy right now, and how different businesses are really capitalizing on the value of a good design to market and carry their brand. Because of my love and intrigue for typography, I had a field day with some of the branding I saw in Nashville at The Pharmacy Burger Parlor & Beer Garden, The Gaylord Opryland Hotel, and over at Hattie B.

Are there any other Nashville treasures I should add to the list for next time? I would love to hear about them!

District 2 Campaign

I have SOOO enjoyed getting  to design and create all the graphics and marketing material for Stephanie Korteweg's District 2 Campaign with Waco ISD's school board. I love the impact she has made in Waco, and in WACO ISD thus far. Getting to personally work with her in the STARS program volunteering with "at risk" kiddos is both envisioning and inspiring.

"Stephanie is Antioch Community Church’s STAR Mentoring Project director, where she is part of the community outreach team. She previously worked as a Waco ISD elementary teacher for about 11 years and was named Outstanding Teacher of the year during the 2007-08 school year at Viking Hills Elementary School." - Waco Trib.

Hope to see you all at the voting booths on May 9th here in Waco !
